As we begin to winddown the LL World Series run for the EMEA teams, its good to reflect on what we learn from watching boys and girls play baseball and softball in these tournaments. For example, after spending a week in Kutno I find myself cheering for the EMEA teams now! Last weekend I was in Portland, Oregon helping move my daughter into her college dormitory. But one of my umpire friends, Chris Ortiz from CA D4 is one of the Little League Softball World Series umpires so I went to watch him perform. Once at the Alpenrose fields, I found myself watching a game between EMEA team from Italy and one of the American teams. I was wearing my EMEA hat I got in Kutno. No one knew who I was, for all they knew I was an Italian parent. Well, I went back for another day of games and cheered for the Italians again.
Now, we all know the Italian Junior Baseball team won our tournament and are in Taylor, Michigan this week for the Junior BB World Series. With one game of pool play left, they are 1 -2 and have a slim chance of making it to the semi-finals. But as I read the game reports on the LL Website, I keep reflecting back to the players and coaches of the Italians we met in Kutno, and I can only imagine those same players at Taylor.
When the 12s start play in Williamsport this weekend, I will be watching the MEA and Europe representatives with interest. But those two teams are really American teams who just happen to com from Germany or Saudi Arabia.
Those who have been to Kutno know how difficult it is for teams in EMEA to improve their skills and to involve more players - truly growing Little League. We can do more for them from the U.S. than just cheering them on. Being an Umpire in Europe is one way.
Good Luck to all!
